An enjoyable epic fantasy adventure, with an interesting cast of characters, each with their own problems, but brought together on the same quest.
A search for a treasure that each desires for different reasons. Andrews creates a wonderful world for her characters to stumble through as they manage to trip themselves up more often than not.
Alaric is a very sympathetic lead. As a Keeper and Historian he is highly respected, but he deserted his responsibilities to queen and country to go on a search of his own, venturing into the realms of forbidden dark magic. He is struggling to cope with all the terrible things he has done and yet he’s still failed to find the cure for his beloved wife’s illness.
The elf, Ayda, is a joyful character and I loved her relationship with the dwarf, Douglon. There were some lovely moments between them and I think they were my favourites. The humans, Milly and Brandson, were a little underdeveloped, it seemed they were there just to make up the numbers.
This is the first book in the Keeper’s Chronicles trilogy, but I’m not sure if I’ll continue the series. Although well written, it didn’t really grab my attention enough to want to read more.
