An unknown invader. A devastating attack. And the system’s uneasy peace is broken.
Decimated, the Caprician Empire teeters on the brink of defeat. Her detractors, restive colonies and rapacious rivals alike, must come together to protect their system from invasion and domination.
Arsaces Wood is a man most wished had been killed the day he halted a doomed rebellion. Resented by the ruling Capricians and shunned by his kin, he now commands a Sentient, the AI warship Westerland.
Yet even as they join the system’s desperate defense, he discovers those he trusts most have been lying to him. Hiding secrets that threaten not only his life, but the very worlds he is fighting to save.
Helen’s Thoughts: 4/5
An action packed Sci Fi adventure following a rogue pilot, Arsaces, who betrayed his own people to prevent all out war. He should have died, but he is scraped out of the cockpit, put back together, and bonded with a sentient warship. Their solar system is attacked by aliens, and Arsaces is the commander the new empress chooses to lead her fleet and defend the homeworlds.
Plenty of intrigue to hook you into the story but I am conflicted about this book. The characters are great, as is the sentinent warship, and I enjoyed the time slip, explaining how Arsaces was rescued and rehabilitated. It’s just with how the Emperor is presented as such a tyrant, the rebellion seems justified. I don’t understand why Arsaces betrayed his people in the first place. Nor does he seem particularly upset that his whole familiy is being methodically wiped out and yet he still reveres his bloodline. Arsaces although a great character, his character arc doesn’t really work for me.
The epilogue threw me as well, it’s seems totally unrelated to the book I just read, and I assume it’s setting up the next book. It could have been more seamless.
That being said, the book is well written, there’s plenty of space battles, destruction, and intrigue, and it will keep you turning the pages.
