If you love coming of age tropes with the heroine learning about her new powers, friends to lovers and a group of bullying teens influenced by an evil spirit then this is the book for you. Aimed at 12-18 year olds, Oyster weaves a magical tale of high school adventures as Dacia tries to control her burgeoning powers.
She will need them, as Nefarious is out to get Dacia and her friends. Nefarious is suitably horrifying demon, Cody is lovable, and Samantha is the sleep deprived best friend.
The prose flows nicely, and you will get hooked about half way, though for me, the repetitive nature of the nightmares, doubts and interrupted sleep could have used some variety, and the head teacher seemed a bit ineffective in her inability to curtail the bullies or their attacks.
I loved how Oster introduced Dacia’s different powers gradually, learning how to use some, accidentally discovering others in a time of need or desperation. Very well done and it all flowed as part of the story.
Ideal for the the young teens in your life, and there is a whole series of magical adventures to keep them entertained.
