Aletheia was born a heresy: a girl with a man’s magic, in a city where monks and witches are mortal enemies. Training in her powers only under her father’s protection, head of the monastery, she shocks everyone by becoming the best seer in generations.
Until her father is murdered. A suicide, they call it, but she knows the truth: he was murdered for his heresy. For her.
Now she must make a harrowing choice: disown everything her father stood for to stay alive, or flee the temple and seek to expose his killers, even as they hunt her down.
Helen’s Thoughts: 4/5
First read of 2026! This has been on my TBR for a while and I finally picked it up. This is the first book in the Tidecaller series, an YA/epic fantasy series. The magic system is unusual and based on water, and there is some great analogies and imagery as the heroine, a powerful seeker who shouldn’t have the powers she has because she’s female. Well you can guess how she feels about that!
A very good YA coming of age story where a young girl with powers that she’s not supposed to have battles against prejudice and political conflict. Not only is she powerful but seen as a threat against those who rule.
Fleeing from those she one thought were friends, she has to learn how to live outside the temple where the threat from the witches is just as bad as the threat from the temple. Caught between two powers, she can either be ground to dust, or find a way to bring them all down.
Enter Gaxna, a street thief with a robin hood complex, who guides Theia through the challenges of surviving on the streets.
An interesting magic system based on the different forms of water, from ice to a flowing stream and everything in between. There is much imagery and analogies based on water, its uses, and various forms.
A good start to the series, with plenty more story to come.
