The silverswords have held Tytan in an iron fist for centuries. That fist has crushed the last hope for the continent.
After quitting mage training, fire mage Fig thought her dealings with the crown and the ruthless silverswords who rule Tytan were over. That is, until she’s summoned by her old friend, Prince Devryn Verrence. His father is dead, betrayed by the silversword enclave. And now Dev is on the run, a king without a throne.
They’ll need to escape Tytan on a quest for allies, because it won’t just be the throne of Tytan they’re fighting for… but the fate of the continent, and the freedom of mages everywhere.
Flames of Gold is book one in Legends of Gold and Silver, an epic fantasy series full of hopeful determination featuring a ragtag cast of mages, dwarves, dragonets and dryads in a sprawling saga of twisty politics, magic, and myth.
Helen’s Thoughts: 5/5
What an enjoyable read. A bit of a slow start, but once it gets going, you can’t stop. Fig is a Fire mage, living peacefully in the Auran forest, until an old friend who is on the run demands her help. Dev is the heir to the throne, but his father has just be killed in a coup and he is running for his life.
Fig is a brilliant character. Strong, determined and yet with a hint of insecurity. She has faults, but her journey to overcome them is wonderful to read. Her doubts that she is good enough is balanced by her determination to teach herself enough to protect her friends.
The little hints of a spark between Fig and Vaelor were great, and I look forward to that growing. Vaelor is a lovely character and as Fig says, is much deserving of happiness. I am so glad he took his chance.
A magical world full of interesting characters and twisty polictical conniving. The world is well developed, and all the political adversaries fall in well together. How Fig and Dev collect their rag tag group of companions is very well done, and they lurch from one catastrophe to the next. You don’t get time to breathe, as anything that can go wrong, does go wrong, and unexpected twists keep you hooked. The story certainly keeps up the pace.
A very enjoyable epic fantasy with plenty more entertainiment yet to come.
