Cole knows he’ll have to work hard to earn Kai’s trust, but time is short and being denied the ability to claim his mate is driving him crazy. With the threat of Kai’s uncle, desperate to get him back, looming, Kai stands to lose much more than his freedom. But as he lets his guard down, he risks losing his heart to Cole.

This is quite a moving read which is set in a world where there are wolf shifters, who hide their abilities from humans and try to live a peaceful life beside them. Wolves have true mates, and once Cole catches the scent of his true mate, he can do nothing but chase after him. Once he finds him, he has to defend him from being attacked and his inner wolf takes over. He is horrified to discover his true mate, Kai, has been subjected to terrible abuse and is fearful and vulnerable, unable to trust or understand what it means to be a true mate.
Cole is an amazing character, gentle and understanding, struggling to cope with his inner wolf’s needs, as well as his own as the almost crippling need to claim his mate wars with the fear that he will scare Kai away. It is agonising to see him tip toe around Kai and yet still be rejected at every turn. Your heart breaks for Kai, who having suffered years of abuse is confused by the feelings the bond stirs in him. He can’t trust Cole, and he fights against his need to be protected, safe, to be able to trust again, to have a family that would love him.
Great story, wonderful characters that you will fall in love with and empathise with. The story draws you in as the emotional rollercoaster takes its toll on both Cole and Kai. This is a really well written MM true mate rejection story with plenty of emotion, action, and sizzling heat to keep you turning the pages. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I want to take Cole home! He is such a kind and gentle giant, but don’t underestimate him, he is an Alpha in waiting.
