Helen’s thoughts: 5/5

Thoroughly enjoyable cozy fantasy series. In this installment we delve a little deeper into jack the lad, Tommy Kilbourne, who is not all he seems to be. We get a chance to see under the covers and discover what is driving Tommy’s behaviour.

Tommy appears to be very self-centred, and thoughtless of others, but he does have a deep abiding love for a woman he can’t have. Clara Jenkins loves Lucas, and there is nothing Tommy can do about it.

Lucas and Clara are lovely characters. Lucas, shy and reserved, Clara bold and adventurous. Between them, they manage to solve mysteries, helped along (or hindered as Lucas might say) by the fact Lucas can seee ghosts. Set in the 1920’s, Amatti recreates the atmosphere of the time, which gives the stories an extra dimension.

In this episode, Tommy is leading everyone astray for his own nepharious purposes, and we the reader don’t trust him an inch, though Clara is determined to see some good in him. Lucas feels vindicated of his low opinion of Tommy, though as the story unravels, he has to depend on rival for help.

Nice to see Amatti exploring her character’s hidden wounds and motivations, and although they don’t absolve Tommy, we do begin to see that Clara might be right, and their might be something worth salvaging from the disaster that is brewing.

Excellent cozy mystery, with plenty of depth. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
