Clueless Witch Meets Quirky Vampire
Alba is about to lose everything during an awful divorce… until she meets The Vampires of Emberbury, who have a very interesting proposition for her. She will get to know Clarence, a vampire gentleman who thinks cloaks and top hats are still in fashion…
Stray Witch offers a different take on a world where vampires live alongside humans but they can only appear during the day in an alternative form. It’s nice to see a variation on the Vampire theme, though some things are as you would expect.
The story follows Alba, who is struggling to balance her children’s needs against an abusive husband who is determined to take her for everything.
Fortunate for her, a nest of vampires offer her a job proposition and reveal that she is a witch, only she didn’t know she was a witch, nor is she sure she believes in vampires.
Stray Witch is well worth a read, the complex characters and original story line keep you engrossed, as Alba learns more about what it means to be a witch, accepts that vampires are real, faces her challenges and overcomes them. There are some gritty themes, dealing with abusive husbands for one, but also a thread of humour and a growing relationship with Clarence, who is a great character, and one who grows on you very quickly. You want to know a lot more about him.
An enjoyable read, which is the first in a series (thank goodness!) but can be read standalone. There is plenty of scope for more stories, how Alba learns more about being a Witch. How the vampires came to be living beneath the city in the first place, and lots more to find out about all the characters so roll on Book two and let’s read some more!
