This was a really good coming of age fantasy tale with an intriguing magic system based on using needles to produce blood to charge a crystal and control their powers. This idea came from real life as the author’s wife suffers from diabetes.
It took a while to get to like Hannah, as she always thinks she knows best, yet when it goes wrong, she runs away. This becomes one of the main character growth arcs, learning to listen and take responsibility for her actions.
Set in a complex world of magical creatures, each with different powers, Hannah runs from one mistake and is rescued by a Trucekeeper. Learning she can control a blood crystal, and a magical world exists sets her on her journey of self discovery.
