Fenn’s first and only memory is finding himself in the middle of a forest, face to face with a dragon spirit mocking him, all knowledge gone apart from his own name.

Lost and confused, his only hope for answers is Calidra—a woman living on the edge of the world with her partner. Forced to return home when her father dies, Calidra has put off facing her estranged mother for seven years, and she begrudgingly helps Fenn, forging papers for him so he can avoid the Queen’s Inquisitors.

But her mother is the least of her worries when they discover an ancient enemy is rising again. It should be impossible with the Iron Crown in power—and Fenn is terrified he might unwittingly be playing a part in the war’s resurgence.

Surrounded by vengeful spirits and powerful magic, Fenn’s desperate attempt to find his way home might well alter the fate of Tassar, and every power in it.

Helen’s Thoughts: 5/5

What a great start to the book, and what a way to hook you in. Fenn finds himself stuck in a bog, with no memory of how he got there, and no memory of anything else either. We now want to know who he is and how he got there.

Add to that a complex world with a rich history, and we are sucked into their problems as an ancient enemy called the Myr resurfaces and threatens the peace. This is a world of ancient spirits who form in the shape of dragons, some of whom help and others who hinder.

Calidra and Jisyel, Apollo and Marla are all equally well developed characters who carry the story with Fenn. All have their own problems, which have influenced their behaviour, especially Valot who is the guilt-ridden mentor who lends a hand now and then, but more often causes trouble.

The Inquisitors are a conundrum, feared even though they are supposed to protect the people. They perform the Iron Queen’s demands, which brings the Iron Queen’s actions into question. I am quite sure there are many questions to be answered about her and who the Myr really are.

An enjoyable epic fantasy with multiple story threads that weave together to make an enthralling whole with plenty more to look forward to.
