Book Review: The Scars that Bind Us by Michele Notaro

What kind of mage would be crazy enough to crush on a shifter? Me. Apparently me.

The world is a messed-up place. Especially for those of us who have magic, and I know just how terrible it can be firsthand. Which is one of the reasons I try to stay away from people… humans and shifters especially.

Unfortunately, the NHSO forces magi to work alongside shifters to help protect the humans from taragorians—scary beasts from another realm. Which means I’m thrown onto a new team and forced to work with Cosmo Ono-Nai, a lion shifter.

And for some reason, I can’t keep my eyes off him.

Helen’s Thoughts: 5/5

Enter a world where shifters and mages are the repressed and the humans are the bigoted, specists people in control. And yet the humans need the shifters and magi to fight the monsters crossing the tears in the veil, and if they don’t then they will punished and tortured.

Madeo and Jude are a magi pair, a dyad, one of the most powerful and yet they have no rights to anything and most of their colleagues look down on them. They have to watch their own backs until they assigned a new shifter team and the alpha shifter lion, Cosmo, comes into their lives.

Cosmo is horrified to find out how the magi are treated and sets out to help them in any way he can. From day one Madeo is fixated on him, but he has suffered terribly at the hands of humans and shifters so trust is a huge issue for him. And so begins the journey of Cosmo trying to breach Madeo’s walls and for them to find happiness together.

This is an MM paranormal romance that extends over multiple books, so although there is an happy for now ending, the story continues. There is a strong story line with plenty of action set in a well developed if horrifying future world. There is also a lot of cussing, so if you don’t like swear words, this is not the book for you. The characters are well written, each with their hang ups and tortured pasts, but you want to get to know each character as they are all so well portrayed. You end up with a vested interest in all of them, so I am glad there are plenty of books and companion stories.
