Ox Matheson was twelve when his father taught him a lesson: Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.
Ox was sixteen when the energetic Bennett family moved in next door, harbouring a secret that would change him forever. For the family are shape-shifters, who can transform into wolves at will. Drawn to their magic, loyalty and enduring friendships, Ox feels a gulf between this extraordinary new world and the quiet life he’s known. He also finds an ally in Joe, the youngest Bennett boy. Joe is charming and handsome, but haunted by scars he cannot heal.
Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town, and tore a hole in his heart. Violence flared, tragedy split the pack and Joe left town, leaving Ox behind. Three years later, the boy is back. Except now he’s a man – and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.
Helen’s Thoughts: 5/5
A shifter story with a difference. TJ Klune adopts an unusal style of writing, which emphaisses thoughts, memories, and emotions. It’s not really about what happens, but how the characters react to those events and their journey of acceptance and growth.
This is an intense read. The emotive prose is very clever, but also quite painful. Klune does not hide from the struggles of young love, loss, and growing up, especially in a world where there is so much hate and aggression. But balanced with that is the idea of pack, family, and finding your place even though you think you don’t fit.
Oxnard, or Ox has always been told he is not good enough, and to expect shit all his life. The arrival of the Bennett family turns that on its head, when Joe claims Ox as his. Not that Ox realises what that means straight away. Ox’s journey to understanding and maturity are central to this story, and the supporting characters circle him as he grows into the man he’s meant to be.
Excellent read, though be prepared to cry. This is an emotionally complex tale, that probably needs a couple of reads to fully understand all the nuances.
