Book Review: A Voice that Thunders – Cully Mack

A Voice That Thunders is the first in an epic fantasy series set in the ancient past when monsters crept into our world, myth was born, and magic first breathed.

What a wonderful book and a great start to the series. Cully creates a magical world full of amazing characters and creatures, and as the story progressed, I found I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know what happened next. And I just love the cover!

The story begins with a violent attack on a peaceful village, where the attackers are violent blood- thirsty giants, the sons of a god and they leave none alive.  Except for six girls who are taken as ‘tithes’ and begin a long journey back to be tested by Shemyaza, the god of his world.

They arrive in the beautiful city of Hermonial, but is all really as it seems? The magical wielders are a wonderful concept, and cleverly use their power, but is it for the good of the people as claimed? The introduction of Nate as the reluctant stepson of a god adds a certain spice to an already tense situation.

Cully creates wonderful characters that you can relate to.  You are rooting for the girls and sympathise with their situation. And yet there are a lot of unanswered questions, that hopefully Cully will delve into more deeply in book two, especially about Gabe and his powers – he does rather spring from innocent lad to doubtful wielder in one bound and we know nothing about how he got his powers or what they are. And where did Nate come from? Who is he really?

Great read. Add it to your list. Look forward to reading Book two: A Voice that Screams.
